General Information

Community Standards

Community Standards apply to students on all residence property (including the building and surrounding grounds) and during residence-related events, even if the event is held off-site.

Read the standards

You are encouraged to personalize your room; however, you must return it to its original state before move-out. Do not use nails, tacks, screws, adhesive tape or glue on walls, floors, ceilings and woodwork. We encourage you to use the bulletin board in your room.

Charges can occur if items damage the walls.

If you have questions and need clarification about what can and cannot be used on your walls, please speak with a Residence Services staff member.

MacEwan is committed to sustainability initiatives, such as recycling and conserving energy and water. Whenever possible, fluorescent lights, water-saving toilets, high-efficiency laundry machines and motion sensors are installed. You are strongly encouraged to contribute to conservation efforts by turning off your lights when you’re out, reducing the amount of time you spend in the shower and recycling when you can.

Please keep your heat off or turned low if you want to have your window open. Close your window if you aren’t home so heat does not escape. When adjusting your thermostat, keep in mind that it takes 20 to 30 minutes for your heater to reach the temperature set on your thermostat.

Tips

  • Turn off your computer when you’re not using it.
  • Turn off the lounge TV after use.
  • Keep fridge doors closed.
  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  • Open your window shade to allow the sun to provide heat.
  • Lower your thermostat before going to bed.
  • Use the cold water settings on the washing machine.
  • Recycle.

If you leave residence for an extended period of time (for example, during the December break), you are responsible for closing your windows, turning off lights and radio alarms, setting your thermostat to 18 degrees Celsius and removing perishable items from your fridge. If Residence Services has to complete these tasks in your absence, you will be charged a fee for staff time.

If you are leaving residence for a weekend or a few nights, please inform your roommate(s) and Residence Life staff.

Keep your ID safe. The cost to replace your Residence ID or your access card is $25. There is also a fee for changing locks if keys are lost.

Spare keys

If you are locked out of your room, you can sign out a spare key from the front desk for 24 hours. You are required to show your Residence ID or government-issued photo ID to sign out a spare key. If you do not return your spare key to the front desk within 24 hours, your lock will be changed at your expense. You can sign out a spare key once per year at no charge, after which a fee will be charged.

Lost keys

If you lose your keys, the main suite door, bedroom door and mailbox locks need to be replaced. You are required to pay a replacement cost for the keys issued to you and the home set of keys kept in the Residence Office. Fees are based on your suite type and are subject to additional charges if a locksmith is required after hours, on weekends or on statutory holidays.

washer and dryers

Each floor has two laundry rooms with card-operated, high-efficiency, front-loading washers and dryers. When life needs a little straightening out, irons and ironing boards can be signed out at the front desk.

Laundry rooms are open 24/7.

You may now access the Coinamatic App to operate the laundry room with your cellphone!

Common areas

Custodians regularly clean common areas like lounges, hallways and laundry rooms. However, you are responsible for cleaning up after yourself in all common areas.

If there is abuse, unnecessary mess or damage to common areas, an investigation is conducted to identify the offender. This may result in the lounges being locked and unavailable for use. If we cannot identify the person responsible, charges will be billed to the wing or floor.

Take responsibility for your living environment by controlling your behaviour and reporting another person’s inappropriate behaviour to Residence Life staff or Residence Services staff.

Suites

You are responsible for cleaning your suite, bedroom, shared living areas and the exterior of your suite door. Ensure there is a way for people to leave messages for you, as you will be responsible if anyone writes on or defaces your room door. Failure to keep these areas clean could result in sanctions as outlined in the Residence Community Standards. Room checks are conducted at least once each term; you will be notified of these checks in advance.

Cleaning schedule

Below is a sample cleaning schedule you can use to divide up chores and to help avoid unnecessary cleaning charges. If you are living in a bachelor suite, consider the schedule as the basic cleaning you will want to do on a weekly basis. If you require a vacuum to clean your suite, you can sign one out from the front desk.

Please bring items found in or around residence to the front desk. The front desk will log the item (date, time and who found it) and keep it secure for 90 days before we donate it to a social services agency.

If you have lost an item, check first with the front desk and then Campus Security (dial 5554).

All residents have their own mailbox. Mail is delivered Monday to Friday, excluding holidays and the December break. Your mailing address is included in the room assignment package that you receive on move-in day. It looks like this:

Parcels, registered mail and special deliveries

When the front desk receives these items, you are notified through the email address on file. You can pick up your delivery at the front desk after showing photo ID and signing for it. These items are not delivered to your room.

Parcel or special deliveries (like flowers) that do not include a name and proper mailing address are returned to the sender. As well, the Residence Office does not accept cash-on-delivery (COD) deliveries or items dropped off by parents or friends.

Quiet hours vary depending on the floor you live on.

Quiet floors

On quiet floors, quiet hours are from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., seven days a week.

Regular floors

On a regular floor, quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday to Thursday and from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Waste and recycling containers are provided in each suite. When your garbage is full, you can bring it to the refuse room on the main floor, near the west elevator.

We encourage you to recycle as much as possible to help reduce waste. All recyclables should be rinsed thoroughly and placed in the recycle room on the main floor near the west elevator. You do not need to separate your recycling.

Put refundable items, like pop bottles and cans, in the appropriate containers on each floor, which are located near the elevator. All money collected from refundable items is donated to the Residence Life Program and used for student programming.

High-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout MacEwan Residence for regular academic use, such as email, Internet research and those much-needed study breaks (a.k.a. cat videos). Each suite also has its own active data port that you can connect to your computer or gaming console for heavier data usage. Netflix binge, anyone?

Eduroam network

You can access Wi-Fi by logging in to the Eduroam network with your MacEwan username and password. To log in to the Eduroam network, add @macewan.ca (NOT @mymacewan.ca) to your MacEwan username. If you have questions about or problems with internet connections or Wi-Fi, contact the front desk.
